Under the supervision of Director of Educational Planning and Counseling, the Sign Language Interpreter shall be responsible for: - Provide individual and group interpreting services in college courses, advising, orientation, testing, tutoring, and campus or special events (Student Life activities, graduation, etc). - Prepare for assignments by reviewing notes and course outline, previewing required texts and course materials, and speaking with faculty, speaker, and/or students. - Must be available to accept interpreting assignments at alternative sites as needed. - Assess language or communication modes of the consumers served. - Assist with student success initiatives for students with disabilities. - Understand the institution's interpretation of FERPA rules of the release of student information to faculty, parents, students, etc. - Monitor student registration activities and recommend solutions to academic difficulties. - Be a student advocate when appropriate. - Refer students to the appropriate specialized staff for such issues as comprehensive counseling, financial assistance, tutoring, etc. - Serve as resource for faculty/staff. Additional Job Functions: - Work cooperatively with counterparts on the other campuses to achieve the College's annual goals and objectives - Engage in professional development opportunities -Assist during peak registration times - Other duties as assigned Level I Interpreter Requirements: - Must have an associate degree in Interpreting or other related field, or must have completed 60 hours college level coursework. - Must have a Interpreter Certification (BEI or RID). Level II Interpreter Requirements: - Must have a bachelor degree (or higher level degree) in Interpreting or other related field. - Must have at least five (5) years of interpreting experience in an educational setting. - Must have an Interpreter Certification (BEI or RID). Additional Requirements: - Must have proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and must have certification through State Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) or National Registry Interpreter for the Deaf (RID). - Must have excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal and presentation skills required. - Must be able to articulate the value of a community college education. - Must possess personal PC computer literacy. - Must possess good organizational skills. - Must possess outstanding customer service skills and have the ability to work with multiple projects and within deadlines. - Must be willing to work with interdisciplinary programs and on committees within the college. - Must be team-oriented with the ability to work well with other staff members in the development and administration of programs within Student Development and throughout the college. - Must embrace a philosophy of servant leadership and foster a positive working environment.
