Renaissance Literature – English

Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a one-year visiting assistant professor in Renaissance literature for the Department of English to begin September 1, 2009.

We seek candidates who have an earned doctorate, but will consider candidates who have achieved ABD status. In order to enhance our students’ educational experiences, we encourage applicants who have an interest in developing and implementing curricula that address multicultural issues.

Assistant Professor of Economics/Finance – Economics and Management

Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor (with appropriate qualifications) in Economics/Finance in the Department of Economics and Management to begin September 1, 2009.

Primary responsibilities will include teaching six courses per year, a once-month experiential course in January taught every other year. Specific course assignments are somewhat flexible, but would include Managerial Finance, Investments, and Financial Markets and Institutions. Trade-offs of teaching assignments with accounting and/or economics might be possible, depending upon qualifications and interests, and to contribute to general education. A commitment to teaching and advising is essential.

Visiting Assistant Prof. of Biology (3 positions) – Biology

Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for three one-year positions as a Visiting Assistant Professor for the Department of Biology to begin September 1, 2009.

We seek candidates who have an earned doctorate, but will consider candidates who are ABD status. A successful candidate will contribute to a student-centered undergraduate biology curriculum. In their application candidates should discuss their commitment to excellence in teaching undergraduates in a liberal arts environment. We are interested in applicants who will complement our commitment to students and faculty from diverse cultural groups, and who will diversify the expertise and experiences represented in the department.

Primary responsibilities of the three positions include five classes, generally with associated labs:

Position 1: In fall semester, a first-year course called Principles of Biology (Bio101) and an upper-level Animal Behavior course (Bio372), a January interim course appropriate to the candidate’s expertise, and in the spring, a first-year Organismal Biology course (Bio102) and an upper-level Ecology course (Bio370).

Position 2: In fall semester, a first-year course called Principles of Biology (Bio101) and an upper-level Comparative Anatomy course (Bio344), a January interim course appropriate to the candidate’s expertise, and in the spring, a first-year Organismal Biology course (Bio102) and a Vertebrate Zoology course (Bio242).

Position 3: In fall semester, two second-year labs for Cellular and Molecular Biology (Bio201 — no lecture responsibilities) and a non-majors biology course plus lab with an emphasis in the candidate’s expertise or interests, a January interim course appropriate to the candidate’s expertise, and in the spring, two first-year Organismal Biology labs (Bio102— no lecture responsibilities) and Developmental Biology course plus lab (Bio382).

The Department of Biology graduates 60-70 majors each year. The department prepares students for continuing education in post-graduate and professional programs in biology, environmental or health-related fields. Students are engaged in research experiences both within and outside of classes. The department recently received a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Undergraduate Science Education Grant.

Biblical Studies – Religion

Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for two, one-year leave replacement positions in the Department of Religion in the area of Biblical Studies to begin September 1, 2009.

We seek candidates who have an earned doctorate, but will consider candidates who have achieved ABD status. Promise of excellence in teaching is required.

The college plans to hire two visiting faculty in the Biblical area, one specializing in Hebrew Bible and another in New Testament. Candidates must be able to teach a Bible survey class, including the New Testament, which meets the college’s theology/biblical studies requirement for a course substantially in the Christian tradition. Additionally, the Hebrew Bible instructor will teach a course on Prophets; the New Testament instructor will teach one course on Jesus and the Gospels and another in the candidate’s area of specialization. Academic experiences and interests in culturally diverse groups a plus. The total teaching load for the academic year is seven courses (3 Fall, 1 January, 3 Spring).

The successful candidate should have a record of outstanding physics teaching in a broad range of physics courses at the TA level or beyond, and must be comfortable teaching with modern laboratory instructional equipment and software. The Physics Department offers a comprehensive major and graduates an average of 15 students per year, of whom a very high percentage pursue graduate and professional degrees. Small Group Communication – Communication Studies
