Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for three one-year positions as a Visiting Assistant Professor for the Department of Biology to begin September 1, 2009.
We seek candidates who have an earned doctorate, but will consider candidates who are ABD status. A successful candidate will contribute to a student-centered undergraduate biology curriculum. In their application candidates should discuss their commitment to excellence in teaching undergraduates in a liberal arts environment. We are interested in applicants who will complement our commitment to students and faculty from diverse cultural groups, and who will diversify the expertise and experiences represented in the department.
Primary responsibilities of the three positions include five classes, generally with associated labs:
Position 1: In fall semester, a first-year course called Principles of Biology (Bio101) and an upper-level Animal Behavior course (Bio372), a January interim course appropriate to the candidate’s expertise, and in the spring, a first-year Organismal Biology course (Bio102) and an upper-level Ecology course (Bio370).
Position 2: In fall semester, a first-year course called Principles of Biology (Bio101) and an upper-level Comparative Anatomy course (Bio344), a January interim course appropriate to the candidate’s expertise, and in the spring, a first-year Organismal Biology course (Bio102) and a Vertebrate Zoology course (Bio242).
Position 3: In fall semester, two second-year labs for Cellular and Molecular Biology (Bio201 — no lecture responsibilities) and a non-majors biology course plus lab with an emphasis in the candidate’s expertise or interests, a January interim course appropriate to the candidate’s expertise, and in the spring, two first-year Organismal Biology labs (Bio102— no lecture responsibilities) and Developmental Biology course plus lab (Bio382).
The Department of Biology graduates 60-70 majors each year. The department prepares students for continuing education in post-graduate and professional programs in biology, environmental or health-related fields. Students are engaged in research experiences both within and outside of classes. The department recently received a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Undergraduate Science Education Grant.
